Hello, this is Sarah. I am excited to be serving as team captain this year. I have had diabetes for 3 1/2 years. Being a teenager with diabetes has some unique challenges. I am entering my sophomore year at Richwoods High School. Not everyone in my classes knows about my diabetes, so it is awkward when I have to do anything pertaining to my diabetes, such as treating a low blood sugar or bolusing (administering insulin through my pump). Sometimes when I bolus, the teachers think I am using a cell phone, which is against the rules.
On the other hand, my diabetes doesn’t stop me from doing things that other teens do. I volunteer at the zoo, at the animal shelter, and this summer I volunteered at Methodist hospital. I play clarinet in the marching band and I love to hang out with my friends.
Diabetes seems normal to me. I don’t think about it very much, yet it is always there. I always have to make sure I have diabetes supplies in my purse, and check before I eat. I don’t like checking my blood sugar in public places, but I have to do it anyway. There is always the worry of going low while doing physical activities. I don’t worry about what my friends might think but I do worry about what other people might think. It gets really annoying always having to check and bolus. Especially if I am really hungry and want to eat right away.
Please donate to our walk team to help us find a cure. My brother and sister and I, as well as everyone with type one diabetes, would really appreciate it!
Thanks and I hope to see you at the walk! :) Sarah
