Following Emily's diagnosis with diabetes at the age of 2 in October 2001, the Coffey family formed a Walk team named, Emmy's Dream Team, to support JDRF. This team participated in the Ron Santo Walk to Cure Diabetes in Chicago, Illinois in 2002, 2003 and 2004. In 2005, the Coffeys helped establish the Central Illinois JDRF Walk in Peoria, Illinois.
In September 2006, one week before the second annual Central Illinois Walk, Matthew was diagnosed with diabetes at age 5. Without enough time to change the team name, the family walked as "Emmy's Dream Team" but included Matthew in their hearts. While trying to come up with a new team name reflecting both Emily and Matthew, the unthinkable occurred. Sarah, age 11, was diagnosed with diabetes on April 1, 2007. A quick brainstorming session with friends and family resulted in a new team name, "3 Coffeys, No Sugar", reflecting the desire of the Coffey children to find a cure for diabetes and have normal blood sugars again. The new team name and team shirts were unveiled for the 2007 Central Illinois JDRF Walk.
To capitalize on the coffee themed team name, Brian and Lori asked Lori McCombs, owner of Leaves-N-Beans Roasting Company in Peoria Heights, to become a team sponsor. Lori eagerly offered assistance and suggested a special coffee blend to be included in her signature StoryTeller’s™ Blends Coffees.
The 3 Coffeys, No Sugar coffee blend is for sale online, in the Leaves-N-Beans coffee shop or at special local or regional events. The coffee is freshly roasted at Leaves-N-Beans and is available either as whole bean or ground, in both regular and decaf. All proceeds from the sale of 3 Coffeys, No Sugar are donated to JDRF to help find a cure for diabetes. Thank you for your order!
